Pizza Hut Testing Delivery of Beer and Wine

Pizza Hut is betting its customers want beer and wine delivered with their pizza.

The pizza chain announced on Tuesday that it will begin testing delivery of beer and wine in different markets in the U.S.

The director of brand marketing for Pizza Hut Stacy Lynn Bourgeois said the pizza chain was excited about offering delivery of beer and wine, calling it a convenience for its customers.

The test service is to begin in Phoenix, Arizona and will include the delivery of Anheuser-Busch brands such as Budweiser, Bud Light, Kilt Lifter and Shock Top. Every beer option will be priced at $10.99.

Wine delivery begins during January in Phoenix, but the final details have not yet been released by Pizza Hut. The company has not yet decided the wines it will be delivering, or if it should offer just full bottles or individual servings, said Bourgeois.

The brand marketing director for Pizza Hut did not say where the company was planning to expand its test program after beginning in Phoenix.

The move by Pizza Hut is its latest attempt to increase its sales. The pizza chain’s parent company, Yum! Brand has seen its stock soar this year, increasing by 32% since January 1. However, Pizza Hut had not performed as while as sister chains KFC and Taco Bell, which has spurred this attempt of a turnaround by the company.

During October, the company announced its new delivery system that promises to keep pies hotter. During the summer, the pizza chain announced that it would be hiring 14,000 more drivers around the country by the end of 2017.

The delivery of beer and wine could provide Pizza Hut with a decided edge. Its biggest competitors Dominos and Papa John’s will only delivery soft drinks and bottled water shows each of their websites.

Nevertheless, the move by Pizza Hut to offer delivery of beer and wine will take a bit of logistical coordination.

The different Pizza Hut locations will need licenses to distribute alcohol, although the company said that many of its locations already are equipped with a license.

Pizza Hut will also have to make sure that all its drivers that deliver beer and wine are 21 years of age or older. Customers will also be required to show proof age when the delivery arrives.
