Patent Reveals Apple’s Ambitious Plans For The Watch

A patent that was recently filed by Apple suggests that advanced sensors will be used on a band designed for the Apple Watch with a view to evaluating sports performance in cases where 3rd-party equipment that includes barbells, footballs, baseball bats and golf clubs are being used. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published the patent last month.

Some of the sensors that will be integrated into the band in order to analyze sports performance include a gyroscope and an accelerometer. The patent also reveals that Apple will include flex sensors and these will be used in determining the contraction and expansion of the wrist muscles. Additionally the band will also be equipped with electromyography sensors which will be used in measuring the electrical signals of a user.

Tightness of grip

To determine the tightness of a grip when a user is holding sports equipment Apple will use strain gauges which will be placed under the watch. Motion sensors would also be used to measure the performance of a user with regards to the equipment’s acceleration and trajectory.

Other sensors that could be used include EMG and caliometric sensors and these would be instrumental in measuring weightlifting performance as well as determining whether a user is exercising properly and letting users know whether their grip is too tight or whether they are over-rotating their wrist. Once the sensors have collected the data an analysis would be conducted with a view to offering feedback to the user concerning their swing or throw.

Apple Music

This comes in the wake of the Cupertino, California-based tech giant appointing a new head of Apple Music, Oliver Schusser who will take the position of vice president of both the music streaming business as well as international content. Schusser, who will be reporting to Eddy Cue, a senior vice president of Internet Software and Services at Apple, will also be in charge of overseeing the services of Apple outside the U.S. and this includes iTunes and the App Store.

The new head of Apple Music Worldwide joined Apple 14 years ago and has been working from London where he was instrumental in Apple’s acquisition of Shazam. Schusser will now relocated to California and will continue leading international teams located in 38 offices spread across the globe.

Currently Apple Music boasts of 40 million paying subscribers compared to Spotify’s 71 million. both firms charge a monthly fee of $9.99 to stream music though discounts are provided to students.
